Ingredients for the dough:

  • 35 oz of flour

  • 9 oz pork fat

  • 1 cup of warm water

  • 1 teaspoon salt

Ingredients for the stuffing:

  • 2 tablespoons of Heritage Blend by Nativo Spices or 2 tablespoons of ground chili

    Salt and pepper to taste

  • 36 oz of meat cut with a knife into small cubes (preferably a beef roast or flank)

  • 3 large onions

  • 2 medium potatoes or 1 large

  • 3 red bell peppers

  • 2 hard-boiled eggs

  • 1 cup of oil

  • 1 minced garlic

  • Cumin to taste

  • Green olives and seedless raisins (optional)

Preparation of the dough:

  1. Place the flour in a large container and make a well in the center.

  2. Add the melted fat and salt. Mix everything with your hands.

  3. Add the warm water little by little while kneading until you get a homogeneous dough.

  4. Let the dough rest for half an hour.

Preparation of the filling:

  1. Peel and chop the onions, peppers, and potatoes into small cubes.

  2. Heat the oil in a skillet and add the onions and peppers.

  3. Cook over medium heat until golden.

  4. Add the minced meat and the potatoes and cook until golden.

  5. Add the Heritage Blend by Nativo Spices to taste.

  6. Cook for a few more minutes and finally incorporate the green olives and raisins if desired.

Assembly of the empanadas:

  1. Stretch the dough with a rolling pin until it is about 1/8 in thick and cut it into circles about 5-6in diameter.

  2. Place a tablespoon of the filling in the center of each circle of dough. Then close the empanada in a half-moon shape and press the edges with a fork.

  3. Place the empanadas in a previously oiled baking dish.

  4. Bake at 350°F for about 20-25 minutes or until golden.
